“I always believe that ultimately, if people are paying attention, then we get good government and good leadership. And when we get lazy, as a democracy and civically start taking shortcuts, then it results in bad government and politics.” - Barack Obama

All of us are neck deep in politics everyday of our lives.

Every organisation on earth that involves human being has its politics. Politics does not have to be a bad thing. Actually politics can be a good thing when we bring people to the table to sit down, work together, compromise and get things done for the common good. Politics is not an end but a means. It is not a product, but a process. It is the art of government. Like other values it has its counterfeits. So much emphasis has been placed upon the false that the significance of the true has been buried and politics has come to express the meaning of crafty and cunning selfishness, instead of candid and sincere service.

Politics is a necessary aspect of human nature that proves we are conflicting. When I speak of politics I mean everything from little white lies to family members and workplace politics to decisions made as elected officials at all levels. The concept of politics encompasses it all. Politics plays a key role in establishing peace and alliance within and between nations by establishing rules, regulations and setting standards for expected codes of conduct. In spite of national origin, politics influence the daily lives of citizens from all socioeconomic backgrounds, races and ethnic origins. Politics influence various aspects of society, including economic opportunities and access to education, healthcare and other vital resources. One of the ruthless realities of living in the real world is that if you want to see something change around you, your opinions matter much less than what you think they do, unless you are in a position of power where you can wield that power to bring the desired change. It doesn’t matter whether you think war is wrong or you wish to see something banned. There are much powerful forces in the world lobbying to make sure they have it their way and if your opinion is not strong and believable enough to create a butterfly effect and generate a mass movement, no amount of placard demonstrations or Facebook posts can bring about any change in the short run. That’s where politics becomes important. It allows you to bestow the power on someone whom you can trust to represent the causes you stand for and in the case of unavailability of such an alternative it allows ‘you’ to represent your cause so that you can use the power to realise whatever change you are fighting for.

Politics is important because it determines what governance means. Far beyond the role of government, at any level, politics determines how we manage our own world and the world around us. In our contemporary world, thinking only of oneself is foolish and puerile. Such attitudes are at best self centred delusion. Politics and governance pervades every aspect of our lives. To ignore that fact is to remain stubbornly ignorant, frustrated and isolated. It is very important to care about politics because you should know what is going on around you. Also, it is important to have a say in what is going on around you. The political decisions people make will affect many lives. Many people see politics as the government and the laws being made, and that is true, but it is way more complicated than that. Every law that is made will impact many. Sometimes the decisions will affect people in a bad way. Every vote that you make will either break people or make people.

So, we should know and care about politics because politics is very important and very complicated. Some people might not care about politics, but when something bad happens, they will regret not voting. Politics is important because we must govern ourselves somehow.
