MANIKGANJ: Saturia free day was observed in a befitting manner through various programmes on Thursday as the upazila was liberated from occupation Pakistan army on this day, reports BSS.
To mark the day, a discussion was held at Saturia Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad complex after being brought out a colorful rally. AKM Nurul Huq, Commander of Upazila Freedom Fighters Command Council, presided over the discussion.
On November 21, 1971, the Pakistan occupied forces retreated from Saturia in the face of fierce attack by Muktijoddha. Freedom Fighter AKM Nurul Huq told BSS that on this day the freedom fighters of the areas named “Baten Bahini” attacked the Pak army camp at Saturia Model High School. Then the Pakistan army walked away the camp after being defeated in the fight. One of the freedom fighters named Ziarat Hossain Khan lost his lives in the fight.
Freedom fighters took control of the camp which was established on August 15, 1971. From the camp, Pak Army conducted operations in different areas.
The occupied forces killed at least 32 freedom fighters including 3 women and buried them in a mass grave yard behind the camp. The freedom fighters demanded to the government to build a memorial on the mass grave yard.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahida Farzana Siddique was present in the function as the chief guest. M Momin Uddin Khan, deputy commander of Manikganj district Freedom Fighters Command Council, Hasmat Ali, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) and Freedom Fighters Hasan Ali, Rabiul Islam, Sohel Rana Haydar, Abdur Razzaque and M Shariful Islam, among others, spoke on the occasion.
