Kushtia: The Islamic University (IU) authorities in Kushtia have increased fees for admission into honour courses in 2017-18 academic session by 300 percent, according to a IU press release issued on Sunday.
Admission fees in Humanities and Social Sciences and Theology faculty have been fixed at Tk12,115 while it was Tk 3,900, last year.
Fees for admission into Applied Science and Technology and Business Administration faculties have been fixed at Tk13,315 and Tk12,415 respectively.
Meanwhile, IU students staged demonstrations on the campus protesting the fee-hike.
Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree held demonstrations on the premises of the university administrative building around 1:30pm.
Abdur Rouf, convener of IU Chhatra Moitree and Morshed Habib, its joint convener, jointly led the demonstrations.
While speaking, they said that education is not goods like potato, eggplant or oil. They also called upon the university authorities to decrease the admission fees, otherwise they declared to continue their demonstrations.
Contacted, IU vice-chancellor Prof Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari said, ”We have systematically increased the fees from this year keeping pace with other universities across the country.”
