People all around celebrate the Victory Day on Saturday with great enthusiasm and solemnity.
CHITTAGONG: The 47thVictory Day was celebrated in the port city through paying rich tribute to the martyred freedom fighters in a befitting manner on Saturday.
Different government, non-government, socio-cultural and political organisations held elaborated daylong programmes to mark the day.
Hundreds of people individually and in procession started gathering at the Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar since early Saturday.
The programmes started with placing floral wreath by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin along with councillors at the Shaheed Minar.
Muktijoddha Sangsad, Awami League, BNP, Chhatra League, Juba League, Chhatra Dal, Workers Party, Communist Party, Jasad, BSD, Chhatra Union, Juba Union, Trade Union Kendra, Chhatra Moitree, District Bar Association, Bodhon Abriti Parishad and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi also paid tribute through placing floral wreaths among others.
Later, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Abdul Mannan, Chittagong Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) SM Moniruzzaman, CMP Commissioner Md Iqbal Bahar, Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Jillur Rahman Chowdhury and Chittagong district Superintendent of Police (SP) Noor-E-Alam Mina placed floral wreaths.
Sufficient law enforcers were deployed in the Shaheed Minar areas to ward off any untoward incident.
However, ‘Muktijoddher Bijoy Mela Parishad’ cancelled its traditional victory procession showing profound respect to late Chittagong city Awami League (AL) President and former Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
Mohiuddin was chairman of the ‘Parishad’ which used to bring out the procession from the city’s MA Aziz Stadium area marking the Victory Day every year, said the procession sub-committee Convener Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury, also law affairs secretary of the city AL.
Among different programmes, Chittagong district administration accorded reception to freedom fighters and families of martyred through a ceremony at gymnasium of MA Aziz Stadium in the afternoon.
The 47th great Victory Day was celebrated on Dhaka University (DU) campus on Saturday amid huge enthusiasm and festivity.
Thousands of students tying the national flag on their heads or hands and wearing dresses combining the colors of the flag — green and red, attended the victory procession and the programmes on the campus.
The national flag was hoisted at the main buildings of the university, including the halls and the VC office.
Students, teachers and employees of the university led by its vice-chancellor Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreath at the National Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, in the morning.
The authorities of all faculties and halls of the university illuminated their buildings with colourful lights and chalked out elaborate programmes, including voluntary blood donation, prayer, and concert programmes on the occasion.
A daylong photo exhibition titled “On the Way to Victory with Newspapers” organised by Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) was also held on the campus. The exhibition was inaugurated by DU VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the morning.
Besides the exhibition, screening of films, cycle procession, portrayal and debate competitions and documentary on Liberation War were among the programmes arranged by different socio-cultural organisations on the TSC premises of the DU.
DU authorities and cultural organisation “Chhayanaut” jointly organised an event styled “Bijoy Utsab” on the university’s central playground at 4:00 pm.
