Two ‘Swechchhasebok League’ men arrested for extortion in Ctg

CHITTAGONG: Police arrested two activists of ‘Swechchhasebok League’ on charge of realising extortion from a land owner in the city on Saturday.

The arrestees were identified as Debashish Nath Debu, 48, and ATM Manjurl Islam alias Ratan. They are activists of ‘Swechchhasebok League’ Chittagong city unit.

Sources said one Bandan Nath has a land property in the city’s Gate No.2 area and he signed an agreement with a developer company for developing apartment.

The accused allegedly demanded Tk 1 crore as extortion from Bandhan for developing the apartment.

As he refused to give the money the accused including Debu, Ratan and Nazmul assaulted him and shot on his back on February 9 in 2016.

Following the incident, the accused were given Tk 70 lakh through five cheques, claimed the plaintiff in the case filed in this connection.

After cancellation of agreement with the developer company, Bandhan, an expatriate in Kuwait, took step to develop the apartment with five other persons. 

As they went to clean the site on February 2 this year, the accused barred them and demanded Tk 30 lakh as extortion again, alleged the plaintiff.

Then he filed a case accusing six persons including the trio, Abu Naser, Idris Mian and Md Zia with concerned Panchlaish police station on Friday.

On information, police arrested the duo from the city’s Sagorika and Muradpur areas on Saturday, said Officer in-Charge (OC) Mohiuddin Mahmud of the police station.

The duo was sent to jail through a court, said the OC.
