Bangalees were heading for final showdown

Today is the 14th day of March, the month of start of our Liberation War. On this day in 1971 the freedom-loving people of the country were heading for final showdown with the Pakistani rulers under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

On March 13 small political parties of West Pakistan having representation in National Assembly in a meeting in Lahore with Maolana Mufti Mahmud in the chair urged President Yahya Khan to reach an understanding with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by accepting his demands.

But the appeal went in vain.

On 14 March addressing a public meeting at Nishtar Park in Karachi People’s Party leader Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto demanded transfer of power separately to the two majority parties in East Pakistan and West Pakistan. Thus he pleaded peculiarly for two Prime Ministers in one country.

Bangabandhu declared on 14 March in a speech that no power on earth would be able to suppress the sprit of independence of Bangalee nation.
