Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said her government outlined a plan to construct a marine driveway stretching from Mirersarai to Chattogram to foster the development of the country’s biggest economic zone.
Sheikh Hasina, also chairperson of the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) Governing Council, came up with the announcement during its Sixth Governing Council Meeting at Prime Minister’s Office.She also directed the BEZA to strictly ensure compliance of environmental standards and obligations in the specialised economic zones producing export-bound products.
PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the reporters after the meeting.
Quoting prime minister he said that her government outlined a plan to construct a marine driveway stretching from Mirersarai to Chattogram.
He said: “The prime minister particularly asked the regulatory authority to keep provision of adequate water bodies and effluent treatment plants (ETP) at every industrial zone.”
“The premier simultaneously asked for creating artificial mangrove forest around the industrial zones particularly along the southern coastlines to protect the region from cyclones, storm surges and other natural disasters,” he said.
The premier also emphasised on flourishing local industries for the country’s overall development and creating opportunities for more employment.She also urged the BEZA authority to create economic zones in undeveloped areas to draw local and foreign investments.
“It is necessary to increase investment along with expansion of trade and business and industrial diversification for making the country financially self-dependent,” she said.
“If the 100 economic zones are established, country’s poverty will be driven away. The foundation of the economic base will be strengthened while production and export will also be increased,” she added.
BEZA’s executive chairman Paban Chowdhury gave a presentation on the activities of the regulatory body and progress of the implementation of decisions taken in its previous Fifth Governing Council Meeting held in January 2017.
Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed and planning minister AHM Mostafa Kamal were present, among others, at the meeting.
