Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Thursday urged law enforcers to take steps for holding free and fair elections in three city corporations.
He claimed that there is now a level playing field for all political parties around the country, which will continue.The CEC come up with the statements after a coordination meeting with law enforcement agencies ahead of the upcoming Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal City Corporation elections at the Election Commission (EC) building in the capital’s Agargaon area.
Nurul Huda said, “We have directed law enforcers to maintain law and order. We have listened to their suggestions and I hope that the three city corporation elections will be held in a peaceful manner.
“I also hope that BNP will take part in the next parliamentary elections. I am optimistic that all parties will participate in the election.” There is no need for stepped-up security, as the current situation is under control, he said.
When asked about BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s participation in the next polls, he said, “The court will deal with the issue whether BNP Chairperson Begum Zia can take part in the next polls or not. It’s nothing to do with the commission.”
Election Commissioners — Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brig Gen (retd) Shahdat Hossain, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed and inspector general (IG) of police, director general (DG) of RAB, divisional commissioners of Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal and returning officers concerned were present at the meeting.
