Today marks the 65 years in films and 79th birthday of the Ammajan-famed artiste

Noted actor Shabnam celebrates her 79th birthday today, marking a remarkable milestone of 65 years in the film industry. Known for her unparalleled acting talent and timeless performances, Shabnam made her debut in 1960 with the film “Rajdhanir Buke”, directed by Ehtesham. Her performance of the song “Ami Rupnogorer Rajkonna Ruper Jadu Enechhi” won the hearts of audience, setting the stage for her stellar career.

Her brother, Mustafiz, recognised her potential and paired her with the legendary actor Rahman in the 1961 film “Harano Din”, also produced by Ehtesham. The film’s success solidified Shabnam’s place in cinema, and she continued to work alongside Rahman in many memorable films, including “Joar Bhata”, “Amar Sangsar”, “Chanda”, “Talash”, “Preet Na Jane Rit”, “Darshan”, “Chalo Maan Gaye” and “Chahat”.

The years from 1962 to 1966 were particularly lucky for Shabnam, as she starred in several hits like “Chanda”, “Talash”, “Preet Na Jane Rit”, “Poyase”, “Kayase Kahu”, “Akheri Station”, and “Darshan”, all of which were hugely successful at the box office.

One of the most iconic films in Shabnam’s career was “Nacher Putul” (1971), released during the Liberation War. The song “Ayanate Oi Muk Dekhbe Jokhon” from this film remains a cherished and popular track to this day.

After 1971, Shabnam continued to shine in films like “Shorto”, “Sandhan”, “Julie”, “Karon”, “Jogajog”, and “Shondeho”. However, she took a long break from the industry after this period.

Shabnam made a grand return to the silver screen in 1999 with “Ammajan” directed by Kazi Hayat. In this film, she played the role of the mother of the hero Manna. Her heartfelt performance as the maternal figure earned her widespread acclaim, and she continues to be fondly remembered by audiences as “Ammajan.”

Meanwhile, today is Shabnam’s birthday.  She never arranges any special programmes on the day. Speaking about birthday, she reflected on her childhood celebrations, recalling the joy of receiving gifts and the companionship of her parents and friends.

“Celebrating birthdays as a child was a lot of fun. I used to get gifts, I loved it very much. I always miss my parents a lot. I miss my childhood friends. And I miss the days I left behind,” she said.

Shabnam added that she feels she has reached the end of her life and asked for prayers for her continued health. She also expressed her hopes for her country, wishing for peace and well-being for its people.
