Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday urged leaders of all political parties to take a renewed oath, invoking the name of Allah, to ensure that every action and initiative is devoted to improving the lives and wellbeing of the people.
“We are gathered here at a crucial turning point. After years of struggle marked by repression, abductions and enforced disappearances, and following the sacrifice of thousands of lives, the democratic process has resumed through the recently held national election,” he said.
“Let us take a fresh vow, in the name of Allah, that all our actions and initiatives will be for the welfare of the people.”
He added that the nation had regained the opportunity to uphold people’s freedom and democratic rights through these sacrifices. “For this, we should first express our gratitude to Allah,” the prime minister said.
Tarique Rahman made the remarks while addressing an iftar mahfil at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center, organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the main opposition party in parliament.
Also the chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique Rahman thanked the organisers, particularly Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the leader of the opposition in parliament, for inviting him, senior leaders of his party and other guests to the programme.
“Today, it is not only the leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and myself who are present. Leaders of other political parties and distinguished figures from various sectors of society have also joined this iftar mahfil,” he said. “All of us must work together for the betterment of the people.”
Saying that the entire nation is watching the government, particularly the political leadership, with high hopes and expectations, the prime minister added, “Let us seek Allah’s mercy so that He grants us the ability to work towards changing the fate of our people.”
The iftar mahfil was presided over by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and attended by leaders from different political parties and prominent members of civil society.
