Former education minister Dipu Moni is set to be released today from Munshiganj District Jail on 12-hour parole to attend the funeral of her husband, Tawfique Nawaz, who died on Tuesday night.
“She will be released at 6am and remain on parole until 6pm on Thursday,” Munshiganj Additional District Magistrate Rezaul Karim told journalists on Wednesday.
Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Gazi Foysal Islam, said her daughter, Tani Deepavali Nawaz, met her mother at the jail in the afternoon to discuss the parole.
After the meeting, Foysal said, she came out and applied for four days’ parole for her mother.
The parole application was submitted to the deputy commissioner on Wednesday afternoon, he added.
Foysal said Dipu Moni would travel to her home in the capital’s Kalabagan area first after walking out of jail. “She will then attend her husband’s funeral prayers at Gulshan Azad Mosque following Zuhr prayers, before his burial at Banani Graveyard,” he added.
A Supreme Court lawyer by profession, Tawfique Nawaz died at around 10:30pm while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital in Gulshan. He was 76.
He had long been suffering from kidney and liver diseases. He was last seen in public on 27 May, when relatives brought him to court in a wheelchair to visit his imprisoned wife.
Dipu Moni has remained in custody since her arrest in multiple cases linked to the July 2024 uprising that ended Awami League rule. Although she has been granted bail in several of those cases by the High Court, other pending charges in Dhaka and Munshiganj have kept her detained.
