Renovation work of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in the capital's Mirpur area have started, four days after it was subjected to an attack, vandalism, and looting.
Simultaneously, the signboard installed by the encroachers has been removed, and the institution's original signboard has been put back up.
Healthcare services continued under the open sky on Monday, even as renovation and cleanup activities were underway.
MA Razzak, joint convener of the Dhaka North city unit of the BNP, said that the renovation is proceeding under the supervision
of State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque.
He also said that the health centre would be prepared quickly – within the next week – to resume healthcare operations fully.
Meanwhile, Sanjida Islam Tulee, a member of parliament for a reserved seat for women, and a representative of “Mayer Dak” visited the site on Monday morning.
She said that an investigation is underway to identify those involved in the attack and assured that the government would take appropriate action.
Besides, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has pledged that it would donate Tk50 lakh for repairing and restoring healthcare services at the severely damaged Radda MCH-FP in Mirpur.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman announced the donation on Monday when inspecting the damage caused by vandalism and looting at the healthcare centre.
“This is an initial package. More support will continue for the people in the area in the future,” Shafiqur told reporters after visiting the site.
He alleged that government-backed people orchestrated the attack on Radda as “none other would have the courage to execute such a major crime.”
“Whoever is the culprit must be brought to justice,” he added.
The leader of the opposition also expressed concern over the deterioration of the country's law and order situation, saying that the government must take immediate steps so that no miscreant can commit any antisocial or criminal activities anywhere in the country.
A group of criminals attacked, looted, and vandalised Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-10, on the night of 24 September.
The clinic authorities alleged that following the attack, a signboard bearing the name "Somomona Dokandar Somobay Samity Limited" had been installed on the premises.
Police have arrested 12 individuals in connection with the incident so far. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) reported that two truckloads of looted goods have also been recovered. Two more accused – Md Mintu, 35, and Md Milon, 45 – have been sent to jail in a case filed over the vandalism and looting at the Radda Healthcare and Family Planning Centre in Mirpur-1, Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order on Monday following two separate petitions filed by police.
Prosecution Division sub-inspector Lutfur Rahman confirmed the matter, saying the court fixed Tuesday for hearing their bail petitions.
Earlier, Shah Ali Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Atowar Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court and sought their detention in jail until completion of the investigation.
According to the petitions, a preliminary investigation had found evidence of Milon’s involvement in the incident and that his detention was necessary for a proper investigation.
Earlier, four accused were sent to jail on 26 September, while six more were sent to jail on 27 September. With the latest two, 12 accused have so far been sent to jail in the case.
