A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over the death of his second wife, Mariam Akter.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order, said state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid.
Defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman sought bail for Nazrul,
citing a compromise petition submitted by the complainant and the accused’s illness.
He told the court that the complainant had no objection to the accused being granted bail and prayed for his release.
State prosecutor Rashid opposed the bail petition, saying a compromise in a case filed under non-compoundable sections was unlawful and had no validity in the case.
“The investigation is still under way. Only after its completion will it be clear whether it was a suicide or murder,” he said.
The state counsel also questioned the role of Abdul Hamid, whose name appeared in the compromise petition, and sought his detention along with the complainant.
Following the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition.
Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah was present in court during the hearing.
However, the lawyer for Mariam’s uncle Obaidur Rahman, a former driver of Nazrul, did not appear at the hearing despite filing a bail petition.
