Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that 317 incidents of violence were recorded across the country between 11 December 2025 and 9 February 2026, leaving five people dead and 603 injured.
The IGP made the remarks on Tuesday (10 February) while briefing journalists at a press conference on the overall law and order situation ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, held at the Police Headquarters Media Centre.
Referring to the overall situation since the announcement of the election schedule, the IGP said that some tension and violence are seen every year during elections.
According to police statistics, from December 11 to February 9, a total of 317 violent incidents occurred across the country, leaving 603 people injured and five killed.
“We consider even a single death unfortunate. We always try to ensure that no death occurs. Still, throughout history, every election in our country has seen casualties. This time, we made our utmost efforts to reduce such incidents as much as possible,” the IGP said.
Responding to questions on security threats, Baharul Alam said any weapon posed a risk to public safety, noting that arms could enter the country through various channels.
“Considering all possible threats, comprehensive preventive and countermeasures have been taken,” he said.
To ensure a free, fair and peaceful election, the IGP said strict controls had been imposed on licensed firearms, with 27,995 legally owned weapons already deposited with the authorities.
He added that the aim was to ensure voting takes place in a peaceful and festive atmosphere.
The police chief also confirmed that a total of 187,603 police personnel have been deployed nationwide during the election.
Outlining the security arrangements, he said a three-tier security system would be in place, with extensive use of technology. “CCTV cameras have been installed in 90 per cent of polling centres. Body-worn cameras will be used at high-risk centres, while superintendents of police will deploy drones for aerial surveillance,” he said.
He added that the enhanced security measures were designed to protect voters and maintain overall law and order throughout the election period.
Besides, mobile police teams will be responsible for patrol and management while striking police forces will be deployed at various locations to deal with any emergency situation, said the IGP.
Besides, members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar will also take part in ensuring election security, he said.
Ansar is the largest contingent deployed for election duty, numbering around six lakh members, he added.
