Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has said that the Bangladesh Army will return to barracks once the newly elected government formally assumes office and issues the necessary directive.
He made the remarks on Sunday at 11:00am while
addressing members of all ranks at a CAS Darbar.
Personnel deployed in United Nations peacekeeping
missions also joined the event virtually.
During the address, the army chief expressed
gratitude to army members for their “remarkable sense of responsibility” and
professionalism while carrying out election duties.
According to meeting sources, General Waker said the
country has returned to the democratic process and that the army had properly
fulfilled the responsibilities assigned to it.
“Whatever was necessary in the interest of the
people has been completed,” he said, adding that the army is now awaiting
instructions from the new government and will return to barracks as soon as
directed.
He also noted that the additional forces deployed
during the election period have already been scaled down.
Sources further said the army chief emphasized the
importance of maintaining the chain of command and instructed unit commanders
to take necessary steps to keep morale high among personnel.
He also urged members of the armed forces to remain
alert and cautious regarding misinformation and disinformation.
