The interim government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus has been formally dissolved through a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division.

According to the notification, issued on Tuesday evening, the president, acting under Clause (3) of Article 56 of the constitution, has appointed Tarique Rahman as prime minister, recognising him as a member of parliament who commands the confidence of the majority in the House.

The president also gave consent for the formation of a new government under his leadership.

“With the formation of the new government, the Council of Advisers of the current interim government shall be considered dissolved,” read the notification.

Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the 11th prime minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday afternoon. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad.

On 8 August 2024, the interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in the face of the mass uprising.
