Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of Opposition in the Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said people must work in unity to ensure the benefits of independence.
He said the nation has yet to fully enjoy those benefits but expressed hope that all have pledged to build a better Bangladesh through collective efforts.
He made the remarks on Thursday after paying tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial, marking Independence Day.
Earlier, opposition leaders, led by Dr Shafiqur Rahman, honoured the martyrs by laying wreaths and offering prayers.
At the programme, Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and opposition chief whip, also paid tribute to the martyrs, freedom fighters and war heroines. He said the aspirations of independence remain unfulfilled, which forced the younger generation to make sacrifices again.
He added that all are working to ensure that no one has to sacrifice blood in the future and to build a Bangladesh based on equality and human dignity, inspired by the spirit of 1971 and July 2024.
