Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that public expectations and the aspirations of those martyred in the student-led mass uprising will receive the highest priority in the process of constitutional reform.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after attending the passing-out parade of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.

Responding to a question on whether the name of former President Ziaur Rahman would be included in the Constitution as the declarer of independence, the minister said a constitutional reform committee would be formed to discuss such issues in detail, said a press release.

“All matters will be considered on a priority basis in line with the July National Charter. The expectations of the people of Bangladesh and the dreams of those martyred in the July mass uprising will be given importance,” he said.

The minister added that the constitutional amendment committee would prepare its draft proposals based on the July National Charter, which has been signed by political parties as a document of political consensus. The proposals will later be discussed in Parliament through the required first, second and third readings before a final decision is taken.

Later, while addressing the certificate distribution ceremony for the newly recruited officers of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch as chief guest, the minister said their professional journey was entering a new chapter.

“This uniform is not just a symbol of power, it is a symbol of responsibility, sacrifice and service,” he said, urging the new officers to serve the country with integrity, courage and humanity.

The home minister also congratulated the members of the batch on successfully completing their training and wished them success in both their professional and personal lives.

Inspector General of Police MD Ali Hossain Fakir and Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy (Additional IGP) GM Azizur Rahman were also present at the programme.
