A Dhaka court on Monday ordered that journalist Shaukat Mahmood be shown arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital, linked to Moncho 71 scuffle.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the
order following a petition submitted by Inspector Md Akhtar Morshed,
investigating officer of the case.
According to the case statement, an organisation
named “Moncho 71” emerged on 5 August 2025 and arranged a roundtable meeting on
28 August at the auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity.
A total of 16 named accused and 70–80 unidentified
individuals reportedly participated in the programme, where they delivered provocative
speeches and were involved in anti-state activities.
Preliminary investigation has found evidence linking
Shaukat Mahmood to the incident. Showing him arrested in the case is necessary
for the sake of a proper investigation and ensuring justice, the petition said.
