A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced two men to life imprisonment in a case over the kidnapping and murder of an 11-year-old boy, Md Shafiqul Islam, alias Milon, in the Kafrul Police Station area in 2008.

The convicts are Al Amin Gharami and Masud Rana, both of whom received life terms. Another accused, Saiful Islam, alias Chhoto Saiful, was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Munshi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4, according to State Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam.

In addition to the prison terms, each of the convicts was fined Tk100,000. In default of payment, they will have to serve an additional one year of simple imprisonment. The court also directed the District Magistrate to realise the fines by auctioning the convicts’ properties and to hand over the proceeds to the victim’s family.

The tribunal acquitted two other accused—Md Abdul Motaleb, alias Mota, and Amirul Islam, alias Rubel—after finding that the charges against them were not proven beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the prosecution, Milon went missing from the North Senpara area under Kafrul Police Station on 6 March 2008. The kidnappers later demanded a ransom of Tk2 million.

When the ransom was not paid, the boy was strangled to death and his body was dumped in the Karnapara River at Sakipara in Ramchandrapur, Savar. The victim’s father, Shahidul Islam, alias Shahid, filed the case with Kafrul Police Station.
