A Dhaka court on Sunday sent ex-DGFI officer Major (retd) Manzil Haider Chowdhury, 48, on a fresh four-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed
the order after the investigation officer of the case, Md Amjad Hossain
Talukdar, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand,
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.
Earlier, Manzil had been on a five-day remand in the
same case since Tuesday (21 April). Prior to that, he had been taken on remand
several times in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud
following his arrest from the DOHS area of Mohakhali on 9 April.
During the hearing, State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha
Sumon argued in favour of remand, while defence lawyer Kamal Hossain opposed
the remand and sought its cancellation.
According to the remand plea, on 12 September last
year, members of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated
organisations held a procession at Bangla Motor, chanting anti-government
slogans and spreading propaganda. Police arrested seven individuals at the
scene.
The plea alleges that Manzil, a close associate of
fugitive former military adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Siddique, used
his influence to support the banned organisations in destabilising the
government by providing funds, instigation, and arms.
