A foreign vessel carrying a significant consignment of octane has anchored at Chittagong Port, strengthening the country’s fuel reserves amid ongoing demand.
The Hong Kong-flagged vessel Quichi, loaded with 26,000 tonnes of octane from Malaysia, reached the outer anchorage of the port on Thursday morning. This marks the third octane shipment to arrive in the country this month.
According to its local agent, Pride Shipping Line, unloading operations from the vessel are scheduled to begin from noon.
Earlier, two additional vessels carrying 26,000 tonnes and 27,000 tonnes of octane arrived at the port on 8 April and 17 April respectively. With the latest consignment, total octane imports for the month have reached 79,000 tonnes.
Officials say that with an estimated daily demand of around 1,200 tonnes, the current stock will be sufficient to meet national requirements for more than two months, offering some relief to the fuel supply situation.
Nazrul Islam, owner of Pride Shipping Line, said that five more vessels carrying octane and diesel are currently stationed at the outer anchorage awaiting clearance. He added that three ships berthed on Wednesday and have already begun discharging fuel.
However, port operations are facing some constraints. With only three dolphin jetties available, it is not possible to accommodate all vessels simultaneously. In addition, adverse weather conditions are causing occasional disruptions to cargo handling activities.
