A Dhaka court on Monday granted a three-day remand for former member of parliament and Lt Gen (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury in a fresh case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasub Ullah Piash
passed the order following a five-day remand petition filed by the
investigation officer, SI Md Habib Ullah of the Detective Branch.
During the hearing, State Counsel Harun-or-Rashid
argued in favour of the remand. He said the accused was one of the key actors
of the 1/11 regime and had allegedly tortured the current Prime Minister,
Tarique Rahman, forcing him to leave the country.
However, the defence sought bail, arguing that the
accused is over 70 years old, his name is not mentioned in the FIR, and there
are no specific allegations against him.
In the latter part of the hearing, the defence
requested the court’s permission for the accused to speak with his family over
the phone. However, the court rejected the request.
Earlier, police produced the accused before the
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court after completion of his previous remand. He
was later shown arrested in this case.
According to the remand application, the victim,
Biplob Sheikh, 19, took part in the anti-discrimination student movement in the
Mirpur-10 area on 19 July 2024, where he was shot in the neck and waist and was
critically injured.
He was later rescued by locals and admitted to Azmal
Hospital in Mirpur-10, where he died at around 11pm while undergoing treatment.
Preliminary investigation has found sufficient
evidence of the involvement of the arrested suspect, Masud, in the incident.
Police said that interrogation is necessary to uncover the main mystery of the
case, identify other accused persons, and obtain detailed information about the
incident.
