Two people died and around 50 passengers suffered injuries after two passenger buses collided head-on in Chattogram’s Lohagara upazila on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred around 11am in front of the Four Season Restaurant area in Chunati on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway.

Local residents said one bus travelled from Chattogram to Cox’s Bazar, while the other moved towards Chattogram from Cox’s Bazar when the collision took place. Passengers alleged that both vehicles travelled at reckless speed before the crash.

The collision badly damaged both buses and left many passengers trapped inside the vehicles.

Authorities identified one of the deceased as Rehena Begum, 60, a resident of Patharia union in Patiya upazila of Chattogram. Sources said she travelled from Patiya to Cox’s Bazar at the time of the accident.

Local people rushed to the scene immediately after the crash and rescued injured passengers before sending them to nearby hospitals.

Doctors later referred eight to 10 critically injured passengers to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Authorities could not immediately confirm the identities of the injured.

Lohagara Fire Service Sub-Officer Firoz Khan said firefighters reached the scene soon after receiving information about the accident. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two victims and transported the injured to hospitals for treatment.

Police have started investigating the cause of the crash.
