A 12-year-old girl, who was seriously injured in a shooting by assailants in the Bayezid Bostami area of Chattogram city, has passed away.

The victim, Reshmi Akter succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at around 9:45am on Thursday (14 May).

Confirming the death, CMCH Director Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin said the child had been admitted to the ICU since last Friday with severe injuries to her head and eye. “Despite all efforts by doctors, she breathed her last this morning,” he added.

The incident occurred on Thursday night last week in the Roufabad Shaheed Minar alley under Bayezid Bostami Police Station, when criminals opened fire during a clash over establishing dominance in the area. A young man named Raju was killed on the spot.

During the incident, Reshmi Akter, who had stepped out of her home to buy betel, was caught in the gunfire and sustained a bullet wound to her left eye.

She was initially taken to a private hospital and later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital after her condition deteriorated. She remained in critical care for seven days before succumbing to her injuries.

Following the incident, the mother of deceased Raju filed a murder case at Bayezid Bostami Police Station. Police said that six people have so far been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
