A Dhaka court has fined food outlet Hanif Biriyani Tk6,00,000 in a case over the production of substandard borhani.

The owner of the company, Md Imtiaz Uddin Rohid, appeared before the court on the first day of the hearing and voluntarily pleaded guilty.

Following the hearing, Special Metropolitan Magistrate Nusrat Sahara Bithi ordered the fine to be paid.

The matter was confirmed by Mohang Kamrul Hasan, a safe food inspector of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

He said an arrest warrant had earlier been issued against the accused in the case. Rohid later appeared before the court and secured bail. During Sunday’s hearing, he admitted the allegations.

The court also ordered a six-month simple imprisonment sentence if the fine is not paid. Authorities said the fine was collected immediately.

In addition, the court directed the company to ensure the quality of its borhani before marketing the product and ordered previously produced items to be withdrawn.

Earlier on 4 May, Safe Food Inspector Mohang filed the case after laboratory tests found that Hanif Biriyani’s self-produced “Shahi Borhani Intake” did not meet required quality standards.

Subsequently, the court issued an arrest warrant against the company owner.
