The “Child Rights Advocacy Coalition in Bangladesh” on Saturday expressed deep shock, anger, and concern over the rape and murder of eight-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa Akter in Mirpur’s Pallabi area, along with a rising number of similar crimes against children across the country, according to a statement.
The coalition said the repeated incidents of sexual
violence and killings of children are “extremely alarming and unacceptable in a
civilised society,” adding that such acts are a clear violation of the UN
Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Citing data from Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), the
coalition said that between January and 20 May, at least 118 children were
raped, 46 faced attempted rape, and 17 were killed either after rape or
following failed attempts.
It also referred to several recent cases, including
incidents in Cumilla, Bhola and Mymensingh, highlighting a disturbing
nationwide trend.
The coalition blamed weak enforcement of laws, lack
of social accountability, inadequate child protection mechanisms, and gaps in
awareness as key reasons behind the rising violence.
Among its key demands, the coalition called for
swift trials through fast-track tribunals, strict punishment for perpetrators,
strengthening of school-based harassment prevention committees, and
establishment of community child protection committees in every ward.
It also urged improved parental supervision of
children’s digital activities and inclusion of child rights education in school
curricula.
The coalition welcomed the arrest of suspects in the
Ramisa case but urged authorities to ensure a transparent investigation and
exemplary punishment.
It also called for long-term psychological and
social rehabilitation support for victims’ families.
