Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Shafiqur Rahman on Monday called for the swift completion of the trial in the Ramisa murder case, criticising what he described as repeated delays in the judicial process.
Speaking to journalists on Monday after meeting the victim’s father Abdul Hannan Mollah at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital, Shafiqur said prolonged legal proceedings could undermine public confidence in justice.
He argued that delays in cases involving serious crimes were tantamount to siding with wrongdoing.
The Jamaat ameer had recently returned from performing Hajj when he learnt of Ramisa’s killing on 1 May.
He said he immediately instructed party members to stand by the bereaved family and later backed public demonstrations demanding a speedy trial and strict punishment for those responsible.
Reiterating his position, he stated that individuals involved in “heinous and barbaric acts” should not be spared under any circumstances.
He also urged lawyers not to defend the accused in ways that could obstruct justice, and appealed to all sections of society to avoid politicising the case.
Shafiqur warned that justice delayed would erode public trust in the judiciary, adding that confidence in the legal system was already weakening due to perceived delays and interference.
He stressed that an independent judiciary was essential for ensuring fair and timely justice for all.
He further said such violent incidents should not be allowed to recur, noting with concern that similar cases continue to occur across the country.
