A property dispute among the children of a deceased man from his four wives in Bhola's Char Fasson escalated into repeated clashes, leaving his body awaiting burial in the family yard.
Police later intervened and oversaw the burial amid heightened tensions over inheritance claims and the burial site.
The incident took place on Saturday (20 June) at the residence of late Abdul Jalil Pandit in Ward No. 3 of Rasulpur Union.
According to local sources, Jalil Pandit died suddenly after falling ill around 3:00am on Friday. Following news of his death, children from his first three marriages arrived at the family home and demanded a share of the inheritance and an accounting of his assets.
At that point, Khadija Akter Smriti, a daughter from Jalil Pandit's fourth wife, claimed that her father had left no property and that no one else was entitled to any share, triggering the first round of clashes.
Khokon, the former son-in-law of Jalil Pandit's fourth wife, alleged that all of his earnings and gold ornaments had been entrusted to his father-in-law and former wife, Smriti, and were later used to purchase two houses and land.
He claimed that after his wife divorced him in 2025 and left, he would not allow the burial to proceed until his assets were returned. Local residents later calmed the situation by assuring him that the matter would be resolved.
Tensions flared again during the burial arrangements. Children from the first three wives insisted that their father had expressed a wish to be buried in front of his house, while Smriti argued that the body should be buried elsewhere, outside the family property.
The disagreement escalated into another clash, prompting police from Shashibhushan Police Station to intervene. Officers brought the situation under control, and the burial was eventually carried out under police protection in front of the family home.
Shashibhushan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Firoz Ahmed said police were dispatched immediately after receiving the report and successfully restored order before the burial was completed.
He added that no written complaint has yet been filed regarding the clashes, but legal action will be taken following an investigation if any formal complaint is received.
