Malaysia's Ministry of Human Resources has pledged to further strengthen governance in the management of foreign workers to ensure that the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers is conducted in a transparent, fair and ethical manner.
Malaysian Human Resources Minister R. Ramanan made the remarks in a statement issued on Monday.
He said the initiative forms part of the joint commitment of Malaysia and Bangladesh to keep the recruitment process free from exploitation, discrimination and irregular financial transactions.
“Bangladeshi workers make a significant contribution to Malaysia's economic growth. Bangladesh is currently one of the country's major sources of foreign labour. Therefore, it is important to further strengthen governance, workers' welfare and ethical recruitment practices, which will benefit both countries,” he said.
Ramanan added that cooperation with Bangladesh in human resource management would not only help ensure the welfare, safety and rights of workers, but also enable Malaysia to meet its labour market demands in a sustainable and responsible manner.
The minister said his ministry would continue to play an active role in strengthening governance in foreign worker management and expanding strategic cooperation with partner countries, including Bangladesh.
The statement came a day after a bilateral meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, during which the two sides agreed to form a Joint Working Group (JWG) to ensure that labour migration from Bangladesh to Malaysia is safe and mutually beneficial.
According to officials, the Joint Working Group will review the existing memorandum of understanding (MoU) on labour migration and lay the groundwork for a new agreement aligned with current realities and the needs of both countries.
