Prime Minister's Adviser and Prime Minister's Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin has called on newly admitted students of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to become not only skilled professionals but also ethical, patriotic and responsible citizens capable of leading the country's future.
Speaking at the orientation programme for the
2025–26 academic session at BUET on Saturday, Mahdi said the university's
students inherit a legacy that extends far beyond Bangladesh's borders, with
BUET graduates and faculty members making significant contributions to leading
universities and institutions around the world.
"By being admitted to BUET, you become part of
a proud legacy that is deeply connected with Bangladesh's history and is
recognised globally," he said.
Mahdi said the government, which assumed office four
months ago, is working to build an education system that produces capable
citizens rather than merely certificate holders.
He said the government's vision, under Prime
Minister Tarique Rahman, is to develop graduates who possess integrity, moral
values, patriotism and professional competence while creating opportunities for
them to become entrepreneurs, innovators and future leaders.
He said BUET, as the country's premier engineering
university, has a special responsibility in achieving that vision.
"You are among the country's brightest and most
creative minds. It is only natural that you will lead the Bangladesh of
tomorrow," he told the students.
The adviser encouraged students to give equal
importance to extracurricular activities alongside academic studies, stressing
that leadership, teamwork, communication and other transferable skills are just
as essential as technical knowledge.
"Academic excellence is important, but so are
interpersonal skills, leadership, teamwork and participation in sports and
cultural activities," he said.
Reflecting on his own student years, Mahdi said
studying at BUET had long been regarded as a matter of great pride and urged
students to live up to that reputation.
"With great recognition comes great
responsibility," he said. "You have the opportunity to take
Bangladesh to a stronger position on the global stage."
He also assured students of the government's
continued support for higher education and research.
Mahdi said education minister and university
authorities were discussing ways to increase research funding for BUET and
improve campus infrastructure.
Referring to the condition of the university
auditorium, he said the government recognised the need for greater investment
and pledged to provide the necessary support.
Addressing the new students, he said they represent
the generation that will shape Bangladesh's future.
"We will stand beside you with our fullest
commitment. As an elected government, we will do everything necessary to
support you in building the Bangladesh of tomorrow," he said.
Mahdi also highlighted BUET's historical
contributions to the country's independence, sovereignty and the July uprising.
He paid tribute to former BUET student Abrar Fahad, saying his legacy reflects
the university's enduring role in nurturing courageous and conscientious
citizens.
"We want every educational institution,
including BUET, to provide students with the platform to fully realise their
talents while upholding the values of independence, sovereignty and responsible
citizenship," he said.
Concluding his address, Mahdi expressed hope that
BUET graduates would emerge as successful entrepreneurs, innovators and
professionals capable of creating employment opportunities for thousands of
people and contributing to the country's long-term development.
"You are the architects of tomorrow's
Bangladesh," he said. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique
Rahman, we will continue to support you as you build a stronger, more
prosperous nation."
