The High Court on Thursday disposed of 2,411 long-pending cases in a single day as part of efforts to reduce the case backlog.
The criminal motion benches of the High Court disposed of 1,655 cases, while the writ motion benches resolved 756 writ petitions, according to a press release signed by Md Shafiqul Islam, public relations officer (PRO) of the Supreme Court.
A total of 26,560 long-pending cases—19,836 criminal miscellaneous cases and 6,724 writ petitions—have been disposed of over the last six working days, with one day each week dedicated to the special drive launched to clear the backlog.
This special drive is being conducted under the directive of the chief justice to streamline the judicial process. The initiative was launched to ensure swift justice for litigants, reduce the case backlog, and enhance the overall dynamism of the country's judiciary.
The special drive to clear decades-old cases will continue, according to the Supreme Court.
On 7 May, the judges of the criminal motion and writ motion benches of the High Court Division launched the special drive.
