A Dhaka court on Friday ordered that expelled Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Mahabub Hossain Samir, 35, be sent to jail in a case filed over allegations of intimidation and extortion in Savar.
Dhaka Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Tajul
Islam Sohel passed the order after a hearing and fixed Sunday for the bail
hearing, Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Bahaj Uddin said.
Earlier, Investigation Officer of the case and
Sub-Inspector Ashish Kumar Das of Savar Model Police Station produced the accused
before the court and sought his detention in jail.
Lawyer Md Mohsin Mia appeared for the accused and
filed a bail petition. The court, however, set Sunday for the bail hearing.
Earlier, on Thursday afternoon, the accused was
arrested from the road in front of the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in
Dhaka.
According to the case statement, on 24 May, the
accused Samir and his associates allegedly attacked and vandalised the house
and rickshaw garage of a man named Shamim Reza and looted cash after he failed
to pay extortion money.
Later, on the night of 12 June, they allegedly
assaulted family members, attempted to outrage the modesty of a woman, and
attempted to kill a child when they again demanded extortion money but failed
to receive it.
The complaint further alleges that properties worth
a total of Tk29 lakh, including cash, rickshaws and gold ornaments, were
looted. Shamim Reza’s cousin, Laboni Begum, filed a case on 24 June at Savar
Model Police Station.
