Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has launched measures to further strengthen the safety of MRT Line-6 in compliance with High Court directives by forming a nine-member implementation and monitoring committee.
In a press release issued on Wednesday (15 July), DMTCL said the move follows the High Court's instructions issued after an accident on MRT Line-6 on 26 October last year.
Following the incident, the court directed the formation of a high-powered safety audit committee led by former Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Dr Jahangir Alam.
After completing its investigation and inspections, the committee submitted a report titled "Identification of Operational Risks, Safety Audit and Structural Integrity of the Constructed Corridor of MRT Line-6."
Based on the findings, the High Court ordered the implementation of eight short-term, 10 medium-term and 10 long-term recommendations outlined in the report.
The court also instructed the authorities to adopt six strategic recommendations in both ongoing and future MRT projects.
DMTCL said the newly formed nine-member committee will oversee the implementation, coordination and regular monitoring of the recommendations.
Progress on the implementation will also be regularly reported to the High Court through the Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division and DMTCL's panel lawyer.
According to DMTCL, proper implementation of the court's directives and the experts' recommendations will make the operation of MRT Line-6 safer, more resilient and aligned with international standards.
The company reaffirmed that passenger safety remains its highest priority and said it is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards in all operational activities.
