The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has warned people in Bangladesh to remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes that misuse the bank's name and logo to lure victims with fake loan offers in exchange for fees.
In a public advisory, the Manila-based multilateral lender stressed that it does not provide loans, grants or financial assistance directly to individuals. It also never asks members of the public to share personal financial information or make payments through mobile financial services or any other channel in return for financial support.
The warning follows reports that fraudsters have created fake websites, Facebook pages, social media accounts and other online platforms impersonating ADB and its officials to deceive people.
According to the bank, scammers are unlawfully using the ADB's name, logo and identity to solicit money from unsuspecting individuals, despite having no affiliation with the institution.
ADB urged the public to ignore any messages, advertisements or offers claiming to provide ADB loans or direct financial assistance and advised anyone approached by individuals or groups making such claims to report the matter to the relevant authorities.
The bank reiterated that it finances development projects in Bangladesh by working with the government and private sector organisations through established, transparent and official procedures.
"Any person claiming to represent ADB and offering loans or financial assistance directly to individuals is acting fraudulently," the bank said.
ADB also encouraged people seeking information about scams involving its name, officials or offices to consult the bank's official scam advisories before responding to any unsolicited offers.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over online financial fraud and identity theft, with scammers increasingly exploiting the names of well-known international organisations to target unsuspecting victims in Bangladesh.
