A case has been filed against Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and four others for allegedly assaulting and attempting to strangle his personal driver to death over the driver’s opposition to an ‘extramarital relationship’ and suspicion that he had leaked a video.
The MP’s driver, Obaidur Rahman, filed the
case with Pallabi Police Station on Tuesday.
Police arrested one of the accused, Aminur
Rahman, after the case was filed. On Wednesday, Sub-Inspector Rakibul Huda,
investigation officer of the case and a member of the DB Police’s Pallabi zonal
team, produced him before a Dhaka court and sought an order to keep him in
jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin
subsequently ordered that Aminur be sent to jail, said Saiful Islam, a
sub-inspector of the prosecution department.
The other accused are Masum Billah, 41,
Mottasim Billah, 25, and Rakibul Hasan, 30.
According to the case statement, Obaidur
lived at his sister’s home in Rosegarden Tower in the capital’s Kalshi area and
worked as Gazi Nazrul’s personal driver. Nazrul used to visit the residence as
he was related to Obaidur.
At one point, an alleged extramarital
relationship developed between Nazrul and Obaidur’s niece. After learning about
the relationship, Obaidur informed his family and requested Nazrul to refrain
from such conduct. Nazrul became angry and threatened to kill him.
Recently, a group in Moghbazar allegedly
obtained some “objectionable videos” of Nazrul and his niece and began
blackmailing him, according to the case statement. Nazrul suspected that
Obaidur had secretly recorded the videos and handed them over to the media and
the group. Over the dispute, the other accused attacked Obaidur on 14 July on
Nazrul’s instructions.
Around 11am that day, Aminur called Obaidur
into the drawing room on the pretext of speaking to him. The other accused then
allegedly beat him indiscriminately with sticks. At one point, Aminur pinned
him to the floor and tried to strangle him. When his mother Tahmina and younger
sister Mim began shouting, the attackers fled, according to the case statement.
Obaidur was later taken to Kurmitola General
Hospital in an injured condition.
