Gopalganj judge allegedly injures trainee lawyer by throwing paperweight

A trainee lawyer was injured after being allegedly struck on the head by a paperweight thrown by a judge during court proceedings at the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Gopalganj on Wednesday (22 July).
The incident took place in the court of the Second Chief Judicial Magistrate, Judicial Magistrate Sujon Mia.
The injured lawyer, Sabiha Sultana, was taken to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital for treatment after sustaining a head injury.
Public Prosecutor and General Secretary of the District Bar Association Advocate MA Alam Selim confirmed the incident and said the matter had been reported to the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
According to eyewitnesses, a commotion broke out in the courtroom while proceedings were underway. The judge repeatedly asked those present to remain silent. When the noise continued, he allegedly became angry and threw a paperweight from the bench, which struck Sabiha on the forehead.
Those present rushed to her aid and took her to the hospital, where she was admitted for treatment.
The incident sparked outrage among lawyers, who described the judge’s alleged conduct as deeply regrettable and unprecedented.
Eyewitness lawyer Khadija Khanam Lipi said she had been conducting a hearing when people at the back of the courtroom began talking loudly.
“Judge Sujon Mia repeatedly asked everyone to remain silent. At one point, he became angry and threw the paperweight in front of him, which hit one of our trainee lawyers directly on the forehead,” she said.
“He is always angry, and we are always afraid whenever we appear before him. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable from a judge,” she added.
Advocate Sohag Samajdar alleged that the judge had previously behaved discourteously and inappropriately towards senior lawyers.
“There has been discussion and criticism among lawyers over his conduct before, but there has been no change. Today, a trainee lawyer was injured after being hit by the paperweight he threw,” he said.
