Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) has clarified that the government has no immediate plan to increase gas prices, following widespread speculation triggered by recent media reports.
In a statement issued on Saturday (1 August), Petrobangla said reports suggesting a gas price hike had created confusion among the public. It stressed that the government has neither taken any decision nor has any current plan to raise gas tariffs.
The corporation urged all stakeholders not to be misled by speculation, adding that any decision regarding a gas price adjustment would be announced officially through the appropriate procedures.
Bangladesh has become increasingly reliant on imported energy in recent years as output from domestic gas fields has declined. To meet rising demand, the country has been importing costly liquefied natural gas (LNG), leading to a significant increase in government subsidies for the gas sector.
Speculation over a possible gas price hike intensified amid recent discussions about disruptions to LNG supplies, ongoing gas shortages and mounting financial pressure on the energy sector. Petrobangla said its statement was intended to dispel the rumours and reassure consumers.
