National University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ASM Amanullah said on Saturday that journalists must play independent, investigative and responsible role in ensuring that accurate information reaches the public amid the spread of misinformation and fake news.

The vice-chancellor made the remarks as the chief guest at the orientation programme of the new batch of the three-month certificate course on mass media for 2026 at the auditorium of the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) on Circuit House Road in the capital on Saturday.

He said freedom of the press, objectivity and responsible journalistic practices can play a crucial role in moving the country and society forward.

“The media is a mirror of society and one of the key pillars of democracy. In this age of information technology, maintaining objectivity and accuracy in news reporting has become more challenging than ever,” he said.

Amanullah said accurate and objective news can guide society in the right direction, while false information and rumours can create disorder within moments.

“There is no alternative to regular training to maintain the quality of journalism, verify information and ensure accountability. Journalism is not merely a profession; it is a social commitment and a noble responsibility,” he said.

He also highlighted the emerging challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), saying journalists need to continuously acquire new knowledge and technological skills to cope with the changing media landscape.

At the programme, PIB Director General Faruk Wasif also spoke.

The event was moderated by PIB Associate Professor Monira Sharmin, while two trainees spoke on behalf of the participants.

PIB coordinators, senior officials, invited guests and trainee journalists were present at the event.
