A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced a man, Imam Hossain, to life imprisonment in a case filed over the abduction of a seven-year-old girl in Keraniganj 12 years ago on the pretext of taking her to a fair by the riverside.
Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 Judge Munsi Md Moshiur Rahman pronounced the verdict, said State Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam.
The court also fined the convict Tk 1 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve an additional year in prison without labour.
Imam Hossain was present in the tribunal when the verdict was pronounced and was later sent to jail under a warrant of sentence.
According to the case documents, the accused allegedly took the child away on the pretext of showing her a fair by the riverside while she was playing with her friends in front of Khejurbagh Noorbagh High School in Keraniganj in October 2014.
The child began screaming after he took her to a reed-filled area in Narikelbagh, Keraniganj. Local people rescued her and detained Imam Hossain. The child’s father, Ibrahim Sheikh, subsequently filed a case with South Keraniganj Police Station.
Police submitted a charge sheet against Imam Hossain in November that year, and the court later framed charges against him and commenced the trial. During the trial, the court recorded the statements of four witnesses.
