A murder case has been filed against unidentified people after four members of the same family were found dead at their home in Rangpur.

The case was filed on Sunday with Rangpur Kotwali Police Station by Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of victim Ganapati Chakraborty, a former teacher of Rangpur Zilla School.

Ganapati Chakraborty, 60, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, also known as Bula, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty, also known as Prarthi, 26, and 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty, also known as Priyam, were found dead at their home in the Machhuapara area of Kamal Kachna in Rangpur.

Police discovered the bodies on Saturday.

According to the case statement, the family was last known to have been in contact with relatives on Thursday night.

Around 11:30pm, Pritilata spoke with her younger sister, Puja Chakraborty, via WhatsApp using her husband's mobile phone, the complaint said.

The family later went to sleep.

Around 2:30am on Friday, Pritilata called her younger sister, but they were unable to speak. Relatives said they were unable to contact her again afterwards.

Concern grew on Saturday morning when Puja repeatedly tried to call her sister and other members of the family, but found all four mobile phones switched off.

Suspecting that something was wrong, Puja and her husband went to the house around 9:15pm on Saturday.

The house was dark and there was no response from inside, according to the complaint.

Puja then went through a neighbouring property and reached the roof of the Chakraborty home. After breaking the lock of a window, she looked inside using a torch.

She saw household items scattered across the rooms and noticed a strong smell coming from inside the house, the case statement said.

Gopinath alleged that the condition of the house suggested that those responsible may have attempted to make the killings appear to have resulted from another incident.

Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Nazmul Kader said the case was registered and police were continuing to investigate the killings.
