A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel ban on Awami League Office Secretary and former prime minister’s personal assistant Biplab Barua and three of his family members in a case filed over graft and money laundering allegations.
The others facing the travel ban are his wife, Soma
Barua; his brother, Biddut Barua; and Biddut’s wife, Agni Barua.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan
Kabir passed the order following an application filed by Anti-Corruption
Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam.
According to the application, an investigation is
ongoing against them over allegations of illegally earning money through
corruption, bribery, abuse of power and various irregularities.
They allegedly committed offences under the Money
Laundering Prevention Act by transferring illegally earned money through
various bank accounts.
During the investigation, the ACC learned from a
reliable source that the persons concerned might flee the country, the
application said.
Therefore, it added, a travel ban was necessary in
the interest of conducting a proper investigation into the allegations.
