BNP acting secretary general and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has questioned former finance minister Saifur Rahman’s death, saying that it needs to be found out if his death was normal or was there any national or international conspiracy behind it.
“Saifur Rahman was such an economist who had played
an important role in building a strong foundation for the country’s economy.
The death of such an eminent personality must generate questions. The matter
needs to be looked into,” Rizvi said.
Rizvi made the remarks while speaking at a memorial
event marking the 17th death anniversary of Saifur Rahman held at
the National Press Club on Monday.
During the event, Rizvi said, “Saifur was both a
national treasure and a pride for BNP. His achievements were recognised both
nationally and internationally. Was his death an accident or was there any
conspiracy behind it? We need to find it out.”
Talking about the economic reforms initiatied by
Saifur, Rizvi added, “Although there was much criticisms about the Value Added
Tax (VAT) system launched during his time, no one abolished it later. Rather,
VAT has contributed significantly to the national economy.”
Rizvi further said, “The country’s economy was
disciplined during Saifur’s tenure. No one had heard about bank looting, money
laundering or adjusting the deficit budget through taking money from banks when
he was in office. The foreign reserve was also in a strong position due to his
policies and management.”
Member of Parliament, Chairman of Parliamentary
Standing Committee on the Ministry of Land, and Saifur’s younger son M Naser
Rahman presided over the meeting.
