Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Saturday announced intensified operations to make Mohammadpur free of teen gangs, saying such groups would not be allowed to exist in the area.
“This Mohammadpur will have no teen gangs.
There will be no such term as ‘teen gang’ here,” the DMP chief said.
He said police will conduct daily drives in
cooperation with local residents to curb drugs, mugging and teen gang
activities in the area.
The DMP Commissioner made the remarks at a
law and order meeting with local residents at Basila Police Lines in Mohammadpur
on Saturday afternoon.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General
Ahsan Habib Palash, DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Osman
Gani, RAB-2 Commander Naimul Hasan and Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn
Mizan, among other senior police officials, attended the meeting.
Representatives of different political
parties and local residents also took part.
Local residents raised concerns about various crimes and the law and order situation in Mohammadpur. Law enforcement officials heard their concerns and assured them of necessary measures to control crime.
Mosleh Uddin said, “Teen gangs, drugs and
mugging are the issues raised most frequently by residents. However, most
residents said teen gang activities and drug sales have declined compared with
the past, while police statistics also show that mugging have come under
considerable control.”
Comparing crime statistics for the past three months with those of the previous three months also showed improvements in teen gang activity, drug-related offences and mugging, he said.
“However, it would not be right to assess the
law and order situation based only on statistics,” the DMP chief said.
Residents want Mohammadpur to be free of
mugging, teen gangs and drugs, and police are working towards that goal, he
said.
