A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted six days’ remand for former lawmaker and Awami League leader Mahfuzur Rahman Mita, while his driver, Golam Mawla Selim, was placed on five days’ remand in an Anti-Terrorism Act case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam
passed the order after a hearing, said public prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqui.
Earlier, the investigation officer and Inspector of the DB’s
Tejgaon division, Masudur Rahman, produced the accused before the court and
sought 10 days’ remand for each of them.
During the hearing, public prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqui
argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyer Mohammad Atiqur Rahman
Khan sought cancellation of the remand and bail for the accused.
In the remand petition, police alleged that the accused, along with leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, organised an illegal procession, chanted anti-state slogans and exploded cocktails near Mohakhali Bus Terminal on 18 June with the aim of creating instability in the country.
Police said the accused needed to be interrogated
extensively to uncover the main plot behind the alleged terrorist activities,
identify and arrest other absconding accused involved in the incident, and
determine the source of the illegal cocktails and bombs allegedly in their
possession.
