Prime Minister Tarique Rahman walked from his hotel in New York to the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday to attend a courtesy meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih on the Rohingya issue.
The prime minister left his residence at the Hyatt Grand Central New York at 4pm local time on 22 September, according to his Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Suzauddoula (Sujon Mahmud).
Tarique Rahman has been in New York since 21 September to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The courtesy meeting was arranged as part of his scheduled engagements on the sidelines of the UNGA session.
Sujon Mahmud said Bangladesh has been hosting Rohingya refugees for a long time. A sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, their safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation to Myanmar, and continued international assistance for the refugees are among Bangladesh’s key diplomatic priorities.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR is playing an important role in providing protection and humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas sheltering in Bangladesh, he said.
The courtesy meeting between the prime minister and the UNHCR high commissioner was part of Tarique Rahman’s international engagements during the UN General Assembly session.
The prime minister arrived at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday evening. After completing airport formalities, he was taken to the Hyatt Grand Central New York hotel.
According to his itinerary, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver Bangladesh’s address at the UN General Assembly’s general debate on 24 September.
