A Dhaka court on Sunday placed an accused on a two-day remand in a case filed over the alleged death of a Special Branch (SB) sub-inspector from beating in Savar’s Aminbazar area.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tanvirul Islam
passed the order after a hearing, said Sub-Inspector Arif Hossain of the
General Registration (GR) section of Savar Police Court.
Earlier on Thursday, police arrested the accused, Maruf,
20, during a raid in the Bardeshi Paschimpara area of Aminbazar.
Later, police produced him before the Chief Judicial
Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on Friday and sought a seven-day remand. The court
then sent him to jail and fixed Sunday for the hearing on the remand plea.
A total of 18 accused have so far been arrested in
the case, sources said.
According to the case statement, on 5 September,
victim Altaf Hossain, 58, went to settle an argument over a man parking his
auto-rickshaw in front of a local auto garage owned by Abul Kalam Azad in
Bardeshi West Para of Savar at around 7:30pm.
At one point during the conversation, the accused
allegedly attacked Altaf with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks, leaving him
critically injured.
He then took shelter at his son Ariful Islam’s
business establishment to save his life. The accused also allegedly attacked
Ariful and vandalised the establishment while he was trying to save his father.
The injured were later rescued and taken to Shaheed
Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Altaf Hossain dead,
while his son was admitted in critical condition.
Following the incident, Altaf’s wife, Shyuli Parvin,
filed a murder case with Savar Police Station.
