The government is aiming to make freshwater fish an export commodity alongside marine fish within a short time.

“We will succeed in exporting freshwater fish alongside marine fish within the shortest possible time,” said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid.

The minister made the remarks at the first meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with Chairman of the committee Khairul Kabir Khokon in the chair.

The minister at the meeting said that the current government is working to ensure the country’s food and nutritional security while transforming fisheries, agriculture and livestock into export-oriented sectors.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the ministry, he said that the ministry’s role is crucial in building a strong, healthy and disease-free nation.

The minister called for coordinated efforts based on field-level experience, people’s needs and future plans, seeking sincere cooperation from all concerned to take the ministry forward.

At the meeting, ministry officials briefed the committee on the manpower, organisational structure, functions and activities of the ministry and its departments and agencies.

The committee has also taken a closer look at the implementation of ongoing projects under the ministry and recommended that necessary measures be taken to complete them as quickly as possible.

It directed the authorities concerned to submit detailed progress reports on the implementation of the projects at the committee’s next meeting, effectively putting project execution under closer parliamentary scrutiny.

The committee unanimously expressed its desire to conduct field-level inspections of various departments and agencies under the ministry to assess their activities.
