Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has said his government will use all its strength to ensure that the law applies equally to everyone.

He made the remarks at a programme held after inaugurating the first-phase rehabilitation of the Muhuri-Kahua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project in Parshuram upazila of Feni on Thursday.

Tarique said his party had been given the responsibility of running the country by the people and would work to establish the rule of law.

“We have fought for years to establish people’s rights,” he said, referring to the political struggle over voting rights and other rights.

He said the people had removed the “authoritarian” government on 5 August 2024 and entrusted the BNP with running the country on 12 February 2026.

“We will use all our strength to ensure that the law is equal for all and establish the rule of law in the country,” he said.

The prime minister alleged that some political groups were trying to create unrest by exploiting certain recent incidents. He said such unrest could disrupt government initiatives, including the Family Card and Farmer Card programmes, canal excavation, development of upazila health complexes and reopening closed mills and factories.

Without naming any particular political party, Tarique accused what he called a political group and a “secret group” of having been involved in wrongdoing during the 1971 Liberation War and alleged that some of their members were involved in violence against women.

He said an investigation into a particular incident was under way and that he would not comment on a matter under investigation. He, however, criticised leaders of the group for commenting on issues outside their own organisation.

Earlier, the prime minister inaugurated the Tk1,542.16 crore project to rehabilitate the Muhuri-Kahua flood control, drainage and irrigation system in northern Feni. The project includes rehabilitation of flood-control embankments, riverbank protection, re-excavation of rivers and water bodies and improvement of irrigation infrastructure.

During his daylong visit to Feni, Tarique also attended a tree-planting programme at Begum Khaleda Zia Women’s College in Fulgazi and was scheduled to inaugurate rooftop solar power supply to the national grid and distribute Family Cards and Farmer Cards.
