Customs officials on Sunday recovered 80 gold bars that were
allegedly concealed inside the shoes of two airline crew members at Hazrat
Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.
The recovered gold weighs approximately 9.34 kilograms and
has an estimated market value of Tk16.25 crore.
Acting on a tip-off, officials from the Customs Intelligence
and Investigation Directorate took position at Hazrat Shahjalal International
Airport on Sunday. At the time, two crew members of Emirates Airlines flight
EK-0582, which arrived in Dhaka from Dubai, were identified as suspicious.
The two crew members were subsequently searched on the
airport runway. During the search, officials found gold bars concealed inside
their shoes using a special technique. A total of 80 gold bars were recovered
from the two crew members. Each bar weighed approximately 117 grams.
According to Customs Intelligence sources, the gold had been
brought into the country concealed inside the crew members’ shoes rather than
being carried openly. Authorities have begun questioning those involved and
conducting preliminary investigations into the incident.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate is
investigating who the gold brought from Dubai was supposed to be delivered to
through the airline crew members, whether anyone else was involved, and how the
gold was brought through the airport’s security system.
Legal proceedings regarding the recovered gold are currently
underway.
